In Matthew, Jesus’ paternal bloodline is presented through Joseph’s heritage. This is done according to Jewish tradition. Jechonias, who was one of Joseph’s predecessors, was so evil that he was cursed by God. In this curse, none of his descendants would sit on the throne of David. This was all recorded so that the virgin birth of the Messiah would be proven to the Jews.
In Luke, Jesus’ maternal bloodline is presented through Mary’s heritage. This was done to present Jesus’s royal lineage and to show the fulfilled prophecies. Mary was a descendant of David’s son Nathan who God had promised he would make the ancestor of the promised king.
Jesus Christ, our Messiah, lived on this earth just as we actively are. If He truly offers us full salvation, it is important to investigate the life He lived. If He knew the limited amount of time He was given, it is important to ponder the intentionality He must have had. Jesus met with the weak and the lowly. It is told how He even dined with sinners. It is important to recognize how He treats particular circumstances, and how he acts in particular situations. The more we learn about these things the more His holy and perfect nature will be revealed to us. The more familiar we become with His character the more attuned we will be with His perfect truth and His truth will set us free.
